With fireworks bursting over the city, the 59th Annual Quebec Winter Carnival opened to the public. Continuing until February 17, the world’s largest winter carnival will have events and entertainment to appeal to all ages.
Braving the winter elements is something the people of Quebec do well and this is the perfect occasion for everyone here to get outside and party. Snow and ice sculptures, winter camping, ice slides, snowshoe challenges and human scaled giant foosball are only a small part of the activities planned.
Over the next two plus weeks, over 650,000 people are expected to come and join the festivities. The streets were buzzing early this evening as people filled the Plains of Abraham for opening festivities tonight at the Ice Palace.
Ice canoe races are scheduled for February 9 & 10. Splendid night parades will occur on February 9 & 16. People will be dancing the night away on February 2 to the tunes spun by renowned DJ’s Mistress Barbara, Skratch Bastid, Grandtheft and Darryl Masih.
Each year a “guest country” is selected and this year the honor went to Russia. A giant snow mural measuring 36 feet wide and 10 feet tall in Bonhomme’s Palace was created to honor this year’s guest country. Throughout the festival and the city in general, Russian inspired drinks and foods are being served.
