Techsmith just gave Camtasia 8 a superb new upgrade with this morning’s release of version 8.1. Adding green screen videos or specific color background removal, users will now be able to place themselves actually in their videos with just a few clicks. The other three major additions to Camtasia 8.1 concern cropping, animation and stitching video clips.

Green Screen effects

In the attached video you’ll see what a great job the green screen effect does with virtually no specialized equipment needed other than some type of ugly green backdrop.

To demonstrate, I used an iPhone4S to record the video. For lighting I used one overhead fluorescent to light the background and myself, and one 150 watt bulb in a clamp light to illuminate my face.

The quality of the resultant video was very good for using strictly amateur tools and I’m sure it would have looked far better had I used a better camera. Nevertheless, I think it demonstrates that anyone can now try green screen video and produce some very compelling effects with the simplest of setups.

More great effects

A new, simpler method to crop your video clips will let you maintain just the relevant portion of your videos.  A new (but optional) way to remove portions of your clips, alllows the clip to remain as one piece of video. Before, splitting your clip left fragments that had to be grouped to keep them together. Now they are stitched back together by default.  Finally, animations and effects can be cut, pasted and reused.  No more creating each one from scratch.
