A trip to the nation’s capital is something everyone should do, but get stuck in gridlock on the beltway for an hour or two, and you’ll be looking for an escape. A weekend getaway to Eastern Maryland is in order.

Head east from Washington, DC – follow Route 50 – drive for less than 90 minutes and you’ve escaped to the Chesapeake Heritage Area.  If eastern seaboard history is your interest, you’ve landed in Nirvana.

Top things to do in Maryland

The eastern side of the Chesapeake Bay is alive with history, not to mention my favorite seafood – crabs. The three counties surrounding Route 50 (Kent County to the north, Queen Anne’s County in the center and Talbot County to the south) are home to a half-dozen driving tours, any of which would make an excellent get-away weekend.

Keep going in Maryland

Drive another hour east from Easton and you’ll be in Wicomico County, MD; home of my favorite “find” of our last trip to Maryland.  Here’s their scenic byway info:

Last fall we had the pleasure of spending some time exploring much of this area, and it’s a world away from the hustle and bustle of D.C.  Follow along as we explore some highlights we discovered in both Talbot and Wicomico Counties.
