West Virginia is unique in its physical shape – having two panhandle areas. The eastern one, bounded by Maryland and Virginia is where we completed our latest roadtrip in Hampshire County. It’s here where you’ll discover Romney, the oldest chartered town of West Virginia.  It’s also home to Capon Springs – a resort like none you’ve experienced before. C’mon along and see if it’s your next family getaway.

Steeped in history, this was ground zero for the French/Indian wars as well as many Civil War conflicts. In fact, Romney changed hands 56 times during the Civil War. On the edge of North versus South, even households were split on which side to fight for when the Civil War broke out.

Now, nestled in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley, with those tumultuous times behind us, this sliver of West Virginia is perfect for a relaxing escape. The attractions, the food and the people all beckon you back to the early 20th century; before fast food, super-speed highways and a blazing Internet. Locals refer to it as their quiet, natural, two-lane paradise. If it’s “relaxing” that you seek – you’ll find it here.
