One of the best ways to cope with the winter vortex is to pull out photos of last year’s summer getaways and to start planning for another one this year. I just pulled out some from a getaway weekend to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware and wanted to share some of the places we really enjoyed.
We stayed at the historic and beautiful Boardwalk Plaza Hotel right on the beach. Open 365 days a year, this place is a classic. You’ll appreciate its Victorian charm the instant you enter the reception area. They offer a range of rooms to fit most budgets and the staff is super friendly and attentive.
Victoria’s is their in-house restaurant that offers a nice selection of meals right alongside the boardwalk. Room service is also available.
The hotel is right around the corner from the town square where there is always something going on in the Bandstand. A local music group performed while we were there and drew a huge crowd of beach-goers. While on the boardwalk, be sure to buy a big bucket of Bricker’s fries – greasy but great.
Want a slightly better-for-you snack – try a breakfast bagel sandwich from Kay’s Kitchen, off Rehoboth Avenue just north on 1st Street. I was there every morning. Delicious.
If you are looking for Starbucks, be prepared to walk. It’s way down Rehoboth Avenue at Lake Avenue (about four long blocks from the ocean.)
If you are heading that way, you might want to rent a bike. I got one for a very reasonable price from Atlantic Cycles Bike Rentals at the corner of the boardwalk and Virginia Avenue. They’ve got a great selection of beach cruisers, hybrids, kid’s bikes, tandems and surreys.
From there, it’s an easy ride north to Cape Henelopen State Park and Gordon’s Pond. Take the boardwalk south and drive all the way to the end, hang a right and you’ll end up at Silver Lake.
TIP: First thing when you arrive in town, pick up a copy of the Rehoboth Beach Main Street’s Official Guide to Rehoboth Beach. You’ll find the back is loaded with coupon’s you can actually use – not the typical tourist trap trash. Enjoy your visit.
