Excitement and relaxation at the same time from a vacation resort
It’s a balancing act. Have lots of fun activities that the kids will enjoy; but also have some down time to relax and actually reflect on the day’s activities. Believe it or not, Sawmill Creek Resort may have actually come up with the perfect solution for blending the two.
Sawmill Creek Resort
Located at 400 Sawmill Creek Drive; Huron, Ohio 44839; Sawmill Creek Resort is in the heart of family-fun country. In less than a half-hour you can be at:
- Cedar Point Amusement Park – the roller coaster capital of the world
- Merry-Go-Round Museum
- African Safari Wildlife Park
- Multiple water parks
- Catawba Island with boats to the three Bass Islands
- Marblehead Peninsula with boats to Kellys Island
- And dozens of beaches, parks and marinas
And while that will keep the kids going for many days, wouldn’t it be nice to have an evening away from all the excitement. Picture a relaxing dinner, and then time for games or talk before the kid’s bedtime.
“So many people have told me this is the perfect place to come when they come to Ohio for the amusement rides. It’s entertainment overload at the parks and the kids just want to keep going from dawn to dark…there’s really no time for us to talk as a family,” relates Greg Hill, president of Sawmill Creek. “They tell me that after spending a day doing what the kids want, this is then the perfect place to have a quiet dinner (we have four places to eat) and then either walk in the nature preserve, go biking on our 235-acres or just spend some relaxing time in our pool. It gives the family a time to reflect on the day’s excitement, but wind down into a relaxing evening.”
You also really don’t even have to leave the property to find things to do. Sawmill Creek really does have something for everyone:
- Par 71; 6,702 yard championship golf course designed by Tom Fazio, golf architect
- Golf lessons from pro – Ryan Spicer
- Sawmill Explorer sunset cruises on Saturday evenings
- Private ½ mile long beach on Lake Erie – perfect for watching the sunsets
- Fishing the shores of Lake Erie or charter a boat for 6
- 176-Slip marina with jet-ski launch
- Kayak and Jet-ski rentals
- North American Woodland Indian Museum
- Indoor and outdoor swimming pools
- Bike rentals
- Tennis courts
The interior of the resort is full of original Indian art and has a great western lodge feel to it. The rooms are spacious and stocked with the nicest amenities. Wi-Fi is free (nice touch) and is available in the public spaces and hallways (not necessarily in the rooms ???). Ice machines are located in each building but there are no refrigerators in the standard rooms. Room service is available.
For breakfast in the morning, enjoy the buffet in the Salmon Run Restaurant and if you spend the weekend, check out their brunch on Sundays.

September 2014 UPDATE:
“Sawmill Creek Resort Now Offers Canopy Tours
The stunning fall foliage and breathtaking heights offer an unparalleled adventure at Sawmill Creek Canopy Tours. On a 30-acre property in the beautiful Vermilion River Valley, you’ll leave everyday life and stress behind as you buckle in for an amazing ride through the treetops.
The 2.5-hour Leaf-Changing Experience consists of six, long zip lines as well as aerial bridges, a floating stairway, and soaring platforms suspended high above the trees that provide an incredible, uncommon view of the natural landscape. Dynamic guides who act as storytellers, coaches, naturalists, and technicians lead each tour. “

Right next door (to the west) is one of the last undeveloped parcels on Lake Erie in the Sandusky Bay area. Despite the name, the path is paved and dry in all but the worst weather.
Entering from Route 6, you’ll see the old gate posts from the days when this was the entrance to Cedar Point. They’ve long since relocated their entrance, but the one-mile long, handicapped accessible, paved path will take you all the way to Lake Erie.
Home to over 300 bird species at one time of the year or another, you’ll never know what you’ll see as you walk along the path. When you arrive at the lake, you’ve got a one-mile wide beach, perfect for relaxing strolls. In all, there are 465 acres of protected wildlife for you to enjoy.
