This has to be the most comfortable cot I’ve ever experienced, and the easiest to set up I’ve ever seen. The Alps Mountaineering Escalade Cot (SKU# 8222014) is an absolute “must see” if you are looking for a cot – either for car camping, for an extra bedroom, or for those unexpected guests.

Twelve months ago, I would have never suggested a cot for guests….unless of course, they were the kind you wished wouldn’t stay in the first place. But, let me explain how I changed my view.

We had been invited to spend the night “glamping” (glamourous camping) at Pineview Reservoir near Ogden, Utah and since I’d never experienced glamping, we had to take them up on the offer.

When you are invited to go glamping, I was curious to see what they would have for sleeping comfort.

To my surprise, upon entering the tent, I was looking at an [easyazon_link identifier=”B001LF3G7M” locale=”US” nw=”n” nf=”y” tag=”thetra03-20″]Alps Mountaineering cot[/easyazon_link]….not what I expected, but, it was a place to sleep.

By morning, my entire view of cots had changed.  Not only did I enjoy my night’s sleep, I became an evangelist for Alps Mountaineering. It was so comfortable, I couldn’t believe it. And it wasn’t just me, my wife was also amazed.  Her experience was just the same as mine.

Later that week, I had a chance to sit down with the rep from Alps Mountaineering at the Outdoor Retailer Show in Salt Lake City and review their line of cots.  Turns out they had one even better than the one we slept on earlier that week.

The Escalade is now my new-found favorite.  It sets up like a dream (be sure to watch the video) and folds up even faster. Not only that, there’s no metal support at the end of the cot. So if you scoot down or up on the cot while sleeping, your head or your feet aren’t hitting anything solid.

Even without that end support, the design of the cot holds the canvas quite taunt and provides perfect support. The overall cot size set-up is 31”wide x 80”long x 20” high.

If you’re on the tall or big side, there’s a big brother called the Escalade Cot XL (SKU# 8223014) which adds 4” in width and 10” in length.  Both cots are capable of supporting 325 pounds.

You won’t take this cot backpacking as it weighs 16 pounds, but it’s ideal when weight is not an issue. Even for traveling, it packs easily in its own travel bag (5”x8”x41”).

Disclosure:  Alps Mountaineering did provide an Escalade so I could do this review and video.
