Lomi is a countertop compost pile – albeit much prettier, and faster, and cleaner, and convenient, etc. etc.
While my wife and I will never create enough compost to fill our garden, it still feels good knowing we are sending out fewer garbage bags to the curb each month. Saving the environment starts one step at a time – right?
So, what do we use it for?
- Kitchen waste – leftovers, scraps, trimmings
- Garden waste – we’ve got an indoor Gardyn that needs pruning weekly
- Plants and old flowers
- Coffee filter and coffee grounds – lots of coffee
- Tea bags and loose leaf tea
- Paper towels and paper napkins
- Plastic grocery store bags
Sounds smelly – doesn’t it? Actually, there is never an odor. On the back, there is a compartment that is filled with charcoal and that filter manages to capture any odor that might otherwise emanate. My wife has a powerful sniffer, and she’s never noticed a thing, despite it being right next to the stovetop.
How does Lomi work you ask?
We’ll let the manufacturer explain it:
Lomi uses heat, abrasion, and oxygen to speed up the breakdown of organic waste into smaller fragments – similar to how earthworms break down and mix plant tissue into soil, except Lomi does this without the smell and mess! Fragmented waste provides more surface area for microbes to accelerate the composting process. The end result is a natural source of soil nutrients that increase the organic content of the soil, helping boost plant growth and soil enrichment.
Lomi contains temperature and humidity sensors that optimize the microbial environment that is essential for great compost. Lomi begins by compacting the contents. The sensors intelligently break down the food scraps without losing any vital microorganisms and lead to mass and volume reduction all while continuous airflow and our heavy-duty grinder turn the compost.
How long does it take?
The fastest cycle, called “Eco-Express”, takes just 4-hours and reduces waste by 80%. If you include bioplastics in your Lomi load, you’ll need to use the “Lomi Approved” mode, which takes 10-hours to complete. If you are in no rush and want to conserve energy, “Grow Mode” takes 20-hours and produces magical compost.
