One of the slimmest is Sheepshead Peninsula \u2013 extending from Bantry on the north, past Ballymoor Mountain, to a lighthouse that sits precariously on a cliff at the very southernmost tip. While it\u2019s a beautiful sight, you\u2019ll only be able to see it from land if you take a walk\u2026a long walk.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesheepsheadway.ie\/index.cfm\/page\/home\">Sheep\u2019s Head Way<\/a>\u00a0was named the <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesheepsheadway.ie\/index.cfm\/page\/history\">Best Walk in Ireland<\/a><\/em><\/strong> shortly after it was opened. It\u2019s easy to see why.\u00a0 No matter what your ability level, you\u2019ll find plenty to enjoy along the Sheep\u2019s Head Way. Mountains, flats, sheer cliffs and sea vistas combine to create a walker\u2019s dream.\u00a0 Be sure to take a bottle of water, as you\u2019ll probably want to linger much longer than you expected.<\/p>\n<div class=\"et_pb_slider et_pb_slider_fullwidth_off et_pb_gallery_post_type\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slides\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Sheeps_Head-3066.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Sheeps_Head-3079.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Sheeps_Head-3116.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Sheeps_Head-3274.jpg);\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<h1><strong>Why Sheep\u2019s Head Way?<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>Before even leaving for Ireland, David Ross from <a title=\"Don\u2019t make my mistake when visiting West Cork, Ireland\" href=\"http:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/2014\/07\/17\/dont-make-mistake-visiting-west-cork-ireland\/\">Top of the Rock<\/a> introduced me to Siobhan Burke with the Sheep\u2019s Head and Bantry Tourism Co-operative.\u00a0 Learning about the place on their website: <a href=\"http:\/\/livingthesheepsheadway.com\/\">Living the Sheep\u2019s Head Way<\/a>, I knew this was a place I had to add to my itinerary.<\/p>\n<p>Since I was unfamiliar with the area, I met up early one morning in Kilcrohane with James O\u2019Mahony and <a href=\"http:\/\/livingthesheepsheadway.com\/Sheeps-Head-walks\">Tony Cumberpatch<\/a> to get a sense of what Sheep\u2019s Head Peninsula is all about. James has lived his life on the Sheep\u2019s Head Peninsula, was instrumental in founding the walking loop, and is a wealth of information.\u00a0 Tony now leads guided walks and was kind enough to show me the way to the lighthouse.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10116\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Sheeps_Head-3057.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10116\" class=\"wp-image-10116 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Sheeps_Head-3057-400x600.jpg?resize=400%2C600\" alt=\"Tony and James\" width=\"400\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Sheeps_Head-3057.jpg?resize=400%2C600&amp;ssl=1 400w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Sheeps_Head-3057.jpg?resize=100%2C150&amp;ssl=1 100w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Sheeps_Head-3057.jpg?resize=200%2C300&amp;ssl=1 200w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Sheeps_Head-3057.jpg?w=683&amp;ssl=1 683w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10116\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tony Cumberpatch (L) and James O\u2019Mahony (R)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Turns out, the path is actually better marked than most and rarely will you be walking without being able to see one of the numbered and labeled sign posts as you hike the hills. The whole peninsula loop is 150km and now connects with eastern extensions so you can hike all the way to <a title=\"Don\u2019t make my mistake when visiting West Cork, Ireland\" href=\"http:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/2014\/07\/17\/dont-make-mistake-visiting-west-cork-ireland\/\">Drimoleague<\/a> and <a title=\"Groovy, furry stones with Irish tales \u2013 it\u2019s all here\" href=\"http:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/2014\/07\/17\/groovy-furry-stones-irish-tales\/\">Gougane Barra<\/a> in West Cork. If you include all the additional smaller loops on the peninsula, it adds up to 250km of marked paths to be enjoyed.<\/p>\n<div class=\"et_pb_slider et_pb_slider_fullwidth_off et_pb_gallery_post_type\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slides\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Sheeps_Head-3048.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Sheeps_Head-3065.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Sheeps_Head-3230.jpg);\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>Only having time to complete a small part of the overall trail, James drove Tony and I to Tooreen where there is parking and the wonderful Sheep\u2019s Head Cafe for supplies and refreshments. Homemade pies, scones and cakes are not to be missed. You can also pick up your hiking maps here.<\/p>\n<h1><strong>Hiking out<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>We headed out to the lighthouse via the southern route with fleeting sights of Mitzen Head and Dunmanus Bay. \u00a0We returned on the northern side of the peninsula with a great view of Bear Island and Bantry Bay. Maybe it\u2019s just me, but walking in Ireland seems to be so much easier than anywhere else I\u2019ve traveled.\u00a0 The ground has a soft, almost bouncy feel to it, making a walk in hiking boots feel more like you are wearing slippers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"et_pb_slider et_pb_slider_fullwidth_off et_pb_gallery_post_type\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slides\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Sheeps_Head-3041.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Sheeps_Head-3072.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Sheeps_Head-3233.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Sheeps_Head-3234.jpg);\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>Don\u2019t get me wrong, we hiked up and over many boulders and stones the size of my car, but when walking on the grass, there was a certain bounce to my step. It\u2019s ideal for long hikes.<\/p>\n<p>Tony said it would be an hour or two out the lighthouse and back, but that turned into more like 3-1\/2 hours with stopping to chat and taking pictures along the way. Oh yeah, it was actually the sheeps fault, as we had to wait one time for a whole herd to pass on a single lane path. James was patiently waiting, so it was great not to have to hurry.<\/p>\n<div class=\"et_pb_slider et_pb_slider_fullwidth_off et_pb_gallery_post_type\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slides\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Sheeps_Head-3239.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Sheeps_Head-3245.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Sheeps_Head-3250.jpg);\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>The lighthouse itself is nestled into the rocks at the southeastern tip of the land, and is easily accessible with a set of steps from the top of the rocky outcropping. It\u2019s not open for tourists, but you can walk around it and enjoy its bird\u2019s eye view of the Atlantic. Looking straight down at some of the cliffs on the way back, it\u2019s easy to see why it\u2019s called the Wild Atlantic Way.<\/p>\n<div class=\"et_pb_slider et_pb_slider_fullwidth_off et_pb_gallery_post_type\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slides\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Sheeps_Head-3136.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Sheeps_Head-3131.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Sheeps_Head-3120.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Sheeps_Head-3115.jpg);\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<h1><strong>Arundel\u2019s by the Pier<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>We finished the morning walk just in time to meet Suzanne Whitty at <a href=\"http:\/\/livingthesheepsheadway.com\/arundels-pier\/\">Arundel\u2019s by the Pier<\/a>, a local pub in Ahakista that\u2019s been in the family since 1890. Shane Arundel and his wife now run the place and offer a menu large enough to make it difficult to pick just one for lunch.
