Still off to a good start.\u00a0 Stop in the <a href=\"http:\/\/whiddyferry.com\/index.php\/Bankhouse\">Bank House Bar &amp; Restaurant<\/a> for food or beverage before you take off for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesheepsheadway.ie\/index.cfm\/page\/whiddy_island_loop_walk\">a walk around the island<\/a>. Look for interesting ruins like the schoolhouse below or some hidden gun batteries.\u00a0Notice the sign?\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesheepsheadway.ie\/\">Sheep\u2019s Head Way<\/a> walking route logos point right and left. It was sensational to see the sunlit buildings against some darker clouds.\u00a0 I also got my first glimpse of the famous Bantry House where I\u2019d be spending the night.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"et_pb_slider et_pb_slider_fullwidth_off et_pb_gallery_post_type\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slides\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Whiddy-Sail-back-3622.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Whiddy-Sail-back-3594.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Whiddy-Sail-back-3589.jpg);\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"removed_link\" title=\"http:\/\/www.bantryhouse.com\/bantryhouse\/\">Bantry House<\/span> is a wonderful Georgian mansion built around 1750 and is still managed and lived in by relatives of the original owners.\u00a0 B&amp;B accommodations are available for those who would like to spend the night.\u00a0 Believe me, you\u2019ll like spending the night here \u2013 just gorgeous inside and out.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"et_pb_slider et_pb_slider_fullwidth_off et_pb_gallery_post_type\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slides\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Bantry-House-3618.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Bantry-House-3631.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Bantry-House-3694.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Bantry-House-3728.jpg);\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>The gardens are the first thing you\u2019ll notice and they are extensive.\u00a0 A formal garden extends up a hillside behind the house and taking the stairway is a perfect place to get a view of the property with the bay behind it. Watch out for the guard chickens who wander at will.<\/p>\n<div class=\"et_pb_slider et_pb_slider_fullwidth_off et_pb_gallery_post_type\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slides\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Bantry-House-3751.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Bantry-House-3668.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Bantry-House-3655.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Bantry-House-3647.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Bantry-House-3628.jpg);\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Tours are given by the owners and there\u2019s quite a bit of history to the house including links to Wolfe Tone and the less-than-successful United Irishmen\u2019s rebellion at the end of the 18<sup>th<\/sup> century.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"et_pb_slider et_pb_slider_fullwidth_off et_pb_gallery_post_type\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slides\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Bantry-House-3756.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Bantry-House-3760.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Bantry-House-3761.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Bantry-House-3767.jpg);\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>Downtown <span class=\"removed_link\" title=\"http:\/\/www.westcork.com\/bantry-tourism\/\">Bantry<\/span> has dozens of historic sites as well if you have time to explore.\u00a0 A large map in the town square will give you a walking route to see them all.\u00a0 If you want a drink after your walk, I\u2019d suggest <a href=\"http:\/\/livingthesheepsheadway.com\/the-snug\/\">The Snug<\/a>, a little pub looking out on the square.\u00a0 Good food, beer and Wi-Fi.\u00a0 A recipe for success.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"et_pb_slider et_pb_slider_fullwidth_off et_pb_gallery_post_type\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slides\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/The-Snug-8753.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/The-Snug-8754.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/The-Snug-8755.jpg);\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>If you are driving, and I hope you are, you might prefer to drive out a few kilometers to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.manningsemporium.ie\/\">Manning\u2019s Emporium<\/a> \u2013 a charming gourmet food shop, deli and caf\u00e9 right on N71 between Bantry and Ballylickey. I met Siobhan Burke from the Sheep\u2019s Head Way organization here and thoroughly enjoyed the conversation and the food. It was a little cool when we arrived, so we ate inside, but they offer both inside and outside seating.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"et_pb_slider et_pb_slider_fullwidth_off et_pb_gallery_post_type\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slides\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Mannings-Emporium-8924.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Mannings-Emporium-8928.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Mannings-Emporium-8926.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Mannings-Emporium-8922.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Mannings-Emporium-8920.jpg);\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>The Emporium was started by Val Manning\u2019s family in the \u00a01930\u2019s and is now run by \u00a0Andrew and Laura Heath, \u00a0who are in the process of a number of upgrades to the premises. What remains the same is that Manning\u2019s Emporium is still the quintessential place for homemade bakery and locally sourced produce.
