Either is good but being both is great. Harrodsburg, KY can certainly lay claim to both.<\/p>\n<p>Turns out that Harrodsburg was the first English settlement west of the Alleghenies when it was founded in 1774. It is also home to America\u2019s largest restored Shaker village.\u00a0 From the simple elegance of the Shaker architecture to the plethora of architectural examples in historic downtown Harrodsburg, I can honestly recommend it as a destination for anyone who appreciates great design.<\/p>\n<p>Photographers, woodcrafters, &amp; history buffs are going to find this place irresistible. The days we spent here were dreary, cold, cloudy, and rain was threatening most of the time\u2026but my shutter finger never left my camera.\u00a0 There was that much to photograph.<\/p>\n<h1><strong>Fort Harrod<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>Completed a year after the town\u2019s founding, Fort Harrod was instrumental in protecting Kentucky\u2019s first inhabitants.\u00a0 In 1927, today\u2019s replica was opened to preserve the memory of this first western outpost.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Fotor0821161942.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-10477\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Fotor0821161942-600x450.jpg?resize=600%2C450\" alt=\"Fort Harrod State Park\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Fotor0821161942.jpg?resize=600%2C450&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Fotor0821161942.jpg?resize=150%2C112&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Fotor0821161942.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Fotor0821161942.jpg?w=1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Cabins and blockhouses can be toured when the fort is open.\u00a0 Buildings are complete with furnishings and tools actually used by the pioneers.\u00a0 Small animals can be found in holding pens within the fort.<\/p>\n<p>A park surrounds the fort with picnic areas and a gift shop.\u00a0 Look for the (unofficial) largest Osage-orange tree in the nation in the park grounds.<\/p>\n<h1><strong>Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>In 1805, a group of Shakers settled here, establishing an area they named Pleasant Hill.\u00a0 As the group grew to almost 500 men, women and children in the 1820\u2019s, they kept adding acreage until they reached more than 4,000 acres.<\/p>\n<div class=\"et_pb_slider et_pb_slider_fullwidth_off et_pb_gallery_post_type\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slides\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/shaker-5863.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/ShakerVillage-5581.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/ShakerVillage-5585.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/ShakerVillage-5595.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/ShakerVillage-5647.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/ShakerVillage-5667.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/ShakerVillage-5694.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/ShakerVillage-5773.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/ShakerVillage-5803.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/ShakerVillage-5831.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/ShakerVillage-5844.jpg);\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>With the rise of the Industrial Revolution in the late 19<sup>th<\/sup> century, the Shaker community entered a period of decline and now Shakers can only be found in New England.<\/p>\n<p>Today, 3,000 of those acres are maintained and 34 of the buildings are operated as a 501 (c)(3) insuring preservation of this National Historic Landmark. Or, a block over from Main Street is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Olde-Bus-Station-Restaurant\/113832168647170\">Olde Bus Station<\/a>, where a sign on the wall proclaims \u201cFree Beer \u2013 tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<h1><strong>Spend the night<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>If you\u2019ve arrived in Harrodsburg by following the Bourbon Trail, you owe it to yourself to reserve a night or two at historic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beaumontinn.com\/\">Beaumont Inn<\/a>, Kentucky\u2019s oldest family-operated country inn. Originally built as a prestigious girl\u2019s boarding school in 1845, the family has been hosting guests here since 1918.\u00a0 Now the fifth generation continues to offer the same fabulous service and food which has earned the inn national acclaim.<\/p>\n<p>If you are a Bourbon aficionado, you should plan ahead to get a seat at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beaumontinn.com\/Distilleries.htm\">private, premium bourbon tasting<\/a> events hosted by Dixon Dedman here at the Inn.
