Going back a decade or so, I recall a rather dull drive through downtown Sandusky, Ohio.\u00a0 On my latest visit, I couldn\u2019t believe the change.\u00a0 Cool-looking buildings, nice parks, and great places to eat and play. Nice going Sandusky \u2013 you\u2019re definitely a hip place to visit once again.<\/p>\n

Sandusky is only minutes from the world-famous Cedar Point, but most parkgoers probably pass right by on their way to the park. Whoops, your bad.\u00a0 You are missing a great place to visit with some cool attractions and some great restaurants, even a speakeasy.<\/p>\n

You gotta visit<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Dozens of buildings, even blocks of buildings have been restored and are currently filling with a host of new businesses.\u00a0 As I walked with Jason Werling, chief photographer and director of multimedia for the Sandusky Register, he pointed out new businesses, one after another.\u00a0 Sure, some old ones are still here, but the vibe is new and exciting once again.<\/p>\n

Highlight of the visit was a trip to the Merry-Go-Round Museum where expert woodsmiths and painters painstakingly and lovingly restore some of these past relics to better than new condition.\u00a0 Did you know there are three distinctly different kinds of merry-go-round horses? With a working carousel in the center of the museum, anyone who appreciates the memories of these fun rides is certain to love a slow wander around the dozens of pieces collected here.<\/p>\n

You gotta eat and drink<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Brand new back in June when I was there was the Small City Taphouse<\/a>.\u00a0 With the most impressive wall of taps, you can select from dozens of draft microbrews.\u00a0 They also have wine for those who prefer bigger bottles.\u00a0 And, be sure to try their appetizers \u2013 just awesome.\u00a0 They\u2019ve taken what was rumored to be one of the worst building interiors and turned it into a lively place filled with locals.<\/p>\n

We stopped for dinner later at the Zinc Brasserie<\/a>.\u00a0 No less lively, it\u2019s a bit quieter here and the emphasis is on really great French-inspired food.\u00a0 There\u2019s a full bar, a great wine list and a couple dozen entrees to select from on the menu.\u00a0 I had their version of surf and turf and it was amazing.\u00a0 I\u2019ll be back for sure.<\/p>\n

Capping off the night, as the sun begins to set over Lake Erie, find your way to Volstead, maybe the city\u2019s first legal speakeasy.\u00a0 But you gotta know the code. Either go to their website www.volsteadbar.com<\/a> or look at their front window for some green lights.\u00a0 If they are illuminated, there are that many seats available.\u00a0 If the lights are off, you\u2019ll have to try back later.\u00a0 But, do try back \u2013 it\u2019s worth the visit.<\/p>\n

The Volstead used to be Dorn Winery and later, the Green Door Brothel (but that\u2019s another story.) Now, it\u2019s a bar downstairs and home to Green Door Mediaworks, a PR firm<\/span> upstairs. Drinks are handcrafted and there are two pages to pick from.\u00a0 They also have reds, whites, and sparkling wines.\u00a0 Once you\u2019re in, you won\u2019t leave thirsty.<\/p>\n

You gotta play<\/strong><\/h1>\n

You don\u2019t head to this Lake Erie Shores and Islands<\/a>\u2019 part of the country without thinking about having some amusement\/water park fun and there\u2019s nothing like Cedar Point<\/a>.\u00a0 Acknowledged around the globe as the \u201cRoller Coaster Capital of the World,\u201d you won\u2019t find anything else even close to this amazing park.<\/p>\n

With over 70 rides and their world-record roller coasters, this is the place to go for family fun activities. You can easily spend a day in the sun or you can find enough to do in the shade that every single person in your party is going to go home happy.\u00a0 With over a mile of sandy beach, parasailing & water ski rentals, a marina, and Soak City Waterpark \u2013 if the water\u2019s your thing, they\u2019ve got you covered.\u00a0 If you want to just wander and eat \u2013 three dozen food vendors will fill every last inch in your stomach.\u00a0 Want to be entertained while you don\u2019t move a muscle \u2013 there are almost a dozen live entertainment venues. There\u2019s a reason it\u2019s been voted \u201cBest Amusement Park in the World\u201d for the past 16 years by Amusement Today<\/em> readers.<\/p>\n

You gotta sleep<\/strong><\/h1>\n

There are two ways to spend the night at Cedar Point \u2013with very different vibes.\u00a0 Check them out on the website<\/a>. Plus, there are three more places operated by Cedar Point, all within minutes of the park which include discounted tickets to the park.<\/p>\n

I spent a night at Castaway Bay and was quite delighted with this combination of hotel and indoor waterpark.\u00a0 Perfect for families with kids, they can run all around and you\u2019ll be happy to know they are somewhere within the same four walls where they started. With giant water tube slides and a huge wave pool, the water park is perfect for little ones or teens. Multiple food outlets within the facility mean you\u2019d never have to leave.\u00a0 Yet, the rooms are quiet and quite spacious.\u00a0 It\u2019s a great place to spend a night or a long weekend.<\/p>\n
