But, walking, and especially my favorite mode of transportation &#8211; biking \u2013 can be tiring if you live in a hilly neighborhood or like to ride on wooded trails. You\u2019ll have some wires to connect, and they all snap together as shown in a provided, detailed instruction manual, so you can make the conversion yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"468\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Swytch-specifications-900x468.jpg?resize=900%2C468&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-105824\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Once it\u2019s installed, you\u2019ll have five levels of power assist while you ride. Of course, you can ride without the assist power and if you do, you\u2019ve added only 5 pounds to the weight of your bike, so it will ride identically to before the conversion. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"571\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Hills-1024-2023-02-22_19-47-03-900x571.jpg?resize=900%2C571&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-105813\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Some people, looking for exercise, only use the power assist going up hills or when their endurance is running low. But when you turn on the power, the wonder of an e-bike becomes extremely evident. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"552\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Hills-1024-2023-02-22_19-44-52-900x552.jpg?resize=900%2C552&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-105814\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As you begin to pedal, the-Bike picks up speed, far in excess of how much you are pedaling. Depending on the level you set, you can barely exert any energy pedaling, and yet the-Bike will be going over 15 mph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Weight \u2013 the bike\u2019s, not yours<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Weight is the other big factor with many of the other makes I\u2019ve tried.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"368\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/bike-weight-900x368.jpg?resize=900%2C368&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-105816\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>They seem to weigh a ton. Lifting these bikes could be enough to give yourself a hernia. Notice, <a href=\"https:\/\/bikegrade.com\/how-much-do-e-Bike-batteries-weigh\/\">in this article <\/a>by Bikegrade.com, that the batteries can add up to 10 pounds just by themselves. Some, they say, will go over 20 pounds!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"628\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Swytch-batteries-in-pocket-900x628.jpg?resize=900%2C628&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-105821\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Swytch\u2019s battery, in contrast, is pocket-sized \u2013 only slightly larger than a large smartphone and weighs just more than one pound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Health benefits \u2013 seniors especially, take note<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As an experiment, I asked ChatGPT to give me the seven top health reasons to ride a bike. <em>You\u2019ll see them here<\/em> with my commentary. Note that Swytch seems to validate each and every one of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Low-Impact: Biking is a low-impact exercise that is easy on the joints, making it a good option for seniors who may have joint pain or arthritis<\/em>. When pedaling with an e-Bike, you never again need to strain those muscles to get up that next hill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Cardiovascular Health: Biking can improve cardiovascular health by increasing heart rate, improving circulation, and strengthening the heart muscle. <\/em>Swytch differs from some other e-Bikes in that you must keep pedaling to keep the power going. You don\u2019t have to pedal HARD, but you must keep that pedal cranking to keep the power flowing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Strength and Endurance: Biking can help build leg strength and endurance, which can be particularly beneficial for seniors who may have decreased muscle mass or strength. <\/em>Maybe we can be real here. If you buy an e-Bike that has a throttle like a motorcycle, where you don\u2019t pedal, you aren\u2019t going to build up any endurance. Just sitting on that seat, doesn\u2019t do it. But for me, it means I can ride hard and when I tire out, I\u2019ve got the Swytch to help me back to the garage or my car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"588\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Swytch-bike-in-architecture-107881_1280-900x588.jpg?resize=900%2C588&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-105827\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Bone Health: Cycling is a weight-bearing activity that can help improve bone density and reduce the risk of osteoporosis. <\/em>Calcium and glucosamine are great supplements, but nothing takes the place of real exercise like biking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Balance and Coordination: Biking can improve balance and coordination, which can help prevent falls and improve overall mobility. <\/em>My doctor always asks about falls \u2013 a major concern in seniors. Whether biking or yoga, the more you practice balancing, the better off you are in your senior years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"402\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Girl-in-historic-center-4574172_1024-900x402.png?resize=900%2C402&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-105826\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Mental Health: Biking can also have positive effects on mental health by reducing stress, improving mood, and increasing overall feelings of well-being. <\/em>Oh, I could go on for hours about this. I used to take hours-long rides when I was younger. With my panniers loaded with photo gear, there was nothing more relaxing than spending a day pedaling from one location to another for more photo opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Social Interaction: Biking can be a social activity, which can help seniors stay engaged and connected with others in their community. <\/em>Riding with my grandchildren is something I just about never attempted as they could take off and leave me in the dust. Not now, little ones!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Who wants to save?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have been looking at e-Bikes or e-Bike conversion kits, you know you can drop a lot of cash for even those that aren\u2019t proven and aren\u2019t supported. Swytch is one I believe in, despite the short time I\u2019ve had it.
