If there\u2019s a country that <\/strong>\u201cgets\u201d<\/strong> biking, it\u2019s Taiwan<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Home to the Giant Bike Company and King Liu, the country\u2019s most ardent biker, Taiwan may be the world\u2019s biking paradise. With phenomenal bike paths, natural parks, bike hotels and even bike coffee shops, this country offers more ways to enjoy the bike than any other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some time ago, Taiwan made the decision to encourage biking and followed through with installations of what I consider to be the best bike paths I\u2019ve seen anywhere. Locally, I am used to having bike lanes painted along the side of the road as an afterthought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the bike lanes meet a bridge or a road narrowing, guess what disappears or gets so narrow that you can\u2019t find it? Of course, it\u2019s the bike path that comes out second. In Taiwan, by contrast, when the path meets a stream, it gets its own bridge. They\u2019ve even built overpasses so one can bike over the freeways. This is a country that \u201cgets it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

While the entire island of Taiwan is only 1\/3 larger than Maryland, it offers a multitude of riding destinations. From casual ride to exerting hill climbs, you can find whatever you are looking for in Taiwan. And if you\u2019re visiting, you\u2019ll find lots of bike rental shops to equip you for the ride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All around Taiwan, you\u2019ll find dozens of bike routes laid out with either urban or coastal routes. The routes will typically have a bike shop somewhere close for supplies or service and will take you to scenic destinations you\u2019ll never see on a tour bus.  Taipei now operates a total of 10 \u201csupply stations\u201d in the city\u2019s riverside parks, where you can quench your thirst, borrow air pumps or take advantage of simple repair services free of charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cisingtan Scenic Area Bikeway – Hualien, Taiwan<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

At Chihsingtan Beach<\/strong>, on the west coast of Taiwan, they’ve outdone themselves with fabulous tiled sidewalks and convenient bike racks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They’ve even built special stairs in the steepest parts of this coastal bikeway, so riders can dismount and walk down the steps while their bikes roll down a ramp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Want to ride in the city? You can pick up a bike in the busy Xinyi District from any of the 20 YouBike rental locations where, for a minimal fee, you can ride a bike and only pay in 15-minute increments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking for more of a challenge, head for Wuling and try a hill climb<\/a> . Passing beautiful mountain farms and greenery, it\u2019s nothing but straight up \u2013 for miles and miles. The downhill is amazing, but first, you\u2019ve got to make the summit. If you\u2019re up for it, this challenge will test your stamina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bike ride to Wuling<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Looking for drop-dead gorgeous scenery, you\u2019ll want to ride the Taroko Gorge<\/a>.  Following the river through this amazing marble gorge, you\u2019ll see rock-face walls like none you\u2019ve seen before. Throw in a couple of wonderfully colorful temples, and you\u2019ll have a hard time deciding \u2013 take pictures or enjoy the ride. Decisions, decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Right in the center of Taiwan is a wonderful inland lake, Sun Moon Lake, where they’ve created a lengthy bike path. Again, it’s all the best bridges, structures, and places to ride for all ages and abilities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here they’ve got another solution to the hilliest portions of the path, where if you have the stamina, and nerve, you can ride up or down the hills. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

People so love their bikes here that hotels are starting to notice and are now providing special rooms for bikers, with special bike racks, bike washing stations and repair facilities on site. Two of the more well-known are Yoho Bike Hotel<\/a> in Kenting and the Formosan Naruwan Hotel<\/span> in Taitung<\/a>. Believe it or not, they even have a \u201cspa\u201d for your bike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No time to spend the night? How about stopping for a cup of coffee? Check out Taipei\u2019s Frog Caf\u00e9, where you hang your bike as you enter. Inside, you can relax amidst a gallery of ever-changing artwork. It might be photographs of someone\u2019s latest bike adventure, or it might be a retro art display. It\u2019ll always be something interesting as the shop\u2019s owners are avid bikers and photographers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
