This is the area known for the world\u2019s highest sea cliffs.<\/p>\n<p>Okay, before I get deluged with comments from other parts of Ireland and the rest of the world, measuring the height of sea cliffs can be done a number of different ways with different results,\u00a0 but suffice it to say, for this article, these are the world\u2019s tallest! (That\u2019s my story and I\u2019m sticking with it.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>On to the Slieve League Sea Cliffs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A drive west along R263 from Killybegs will bring you to the little town of An Charraig. Turn south here, following the Wild Atlantic Way signs, and it\u2019s about 7km to the cliffs.\u00a0 You\u2019ll be following Teelin Road (aka Teileann) with some great views of the Glen River, and you\u2019ll know you\u2019re on course when you reach Ti Linn artisan cafe.<\/p>\n<div class=\"et_pb_slider et_pb_slider_fullwidth_off et_pb_gallery_post_type\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slides\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/River-Glen-1894.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/River-Glen-1906.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/River-Glen-1908.jpg);\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>I think the Irish take great delight in making their spelling and pronunciation so similar and so complicated that only a true Gaeltacht can get it right.\u00a0 Geez.\u00a0 But, meanwhile back at the caf\u00e9\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.slieveleaguecliffs.ie\/\">Ti Linn (aka Slieve League Cliffs Centre)<\/a> is a great place to stop for souvenirs, beverages and those last minute necessities you forgot to bring.\u00a0 It\u2019s the only place to buy anything for the remaining miles to the cliffs and back again.\u00a0 The free Wi-Fi was quite popular here, as were the restrooms.\u00a0 Tip: plan your major liquid refreshments when you get back from the cliffs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/TiLinn-1918.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-10804\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/TiLinn-1918-600x400.jpg?resize=600%2C400\" alt=\"Slieve League Cliffs Centre &amp; <span class=\"removed_link\" title=\"https:\/\/theta360.com\/s\/Pxl\">Spherical Image &#8211; RICOH THETA<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script src=\"https:\/\/theta360.com\/widgets.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Just a short couple steps to the edge of the precipice, and you have the perfect view of the cliffs and the wild Atlantic lapping at its base.<\/p>\n<div class=\"et_pb_slider et_pb_slider_fullwidth_off et_pb_gallery_post_type\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slides\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Slieve-League-1998.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Slieve-League-2002.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Slieve-League-2004.jpg);\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>At almost 2,000 feet in height, the cliffs are truly amazing even from the parking lot, but we wanted to see them closer. An easily navigated hiking path takes you northeast and then wraps you around to the northwest to get what I think were the best views.\u00a0 At one point, you are looking straight down 1,500 feet to the surf. (Watch your step \u2013 no guard rails here.)<\/p>\n<div class=\"et_pb_slider et_pb_slider_fullwidth_off et_pb_gallery_post_type\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slides\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Slieve-League-2027.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Slieve-League-2052.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Slieve-League-2062.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Slieve-League-2067.jpg);\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>Granted, you\u2019ll do a fair amount of stepping up onto large rocks, so it\u2019s not a walk in the park, but anyone with good leg muscles and a good sense of balance can handle it.\u00a0 Walking sticks make it that much easier coming back down.<\/p>\n<p>7,000 years ago, the inhabitants of this part of Ireland considered the cliffs to be the end of the world.\u00a0 As such, these high cliffs were ideal places to build their places of worship since they were so close to heaven.<\/p>\n<div class=\"et_pb_slider et_pb_slider_fullwidth_off et_pb_gallery_post_type\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slides\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Slieve-League-2029.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Slieve-League-2023.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Slieve-League-2019.jpg);\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>Much further hikes can be enjoyed, even walking cross country for an over-night journey, but it would behoove you to do that with a guide like Sean Mullan who accompanied us up to the top.
