Just another reason they call it the \u201cWild\u201d Atlantic Way. Ever so slowing, the bog fields expanded, eventually covering this entire area and preserving it for some 5,000 years.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/2014\/12\/30\/county-mayo-preserves-past-pedals-future\/county-mayo-2373\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-12212\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" the Ceide Fields site is rather hard to grasp, luckily there are excellent docents available during operating hours to explain the intricacies of what you are viewing.\u00a0 Signage is available in both Irish and English throughout the museum.<\/p>\n<p><a this as a pine tree?\u00a0 Well it was, some 4,400 years ago.\u00a0 The tree was a Scots Pine and most likely came from\u00a0 a forest which grew onto Belderrig Stone Age farm site, about 7 km west of Ceide Fields.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/2014\/12\/30\/county-mayo-preserves-past-pedals-future\/5000-year-old-tree-preserved-in-the-ceide-bog-fields-at-ballycastle-2\/\" could have been 150-200 years old when it was blown over, falling into the bog, where it was preserved. \u00a0Radiocarbon dating was done to calculate the date it was growing \u2013 4,200 \u2013 4,400 years ago.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/2014\/12\/30\/county-mayo-preserves-past-pedals-future\/bog-fields-in-claggan-county-mayo\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-12216\"><img fields can still be found today and one of the largest is in Claggan, County Mayo, where these beautiful plants manage to still grow along the roadway.<\/p>\n<p><a awards for its facilities as well as its fine dining.
