In addition to the battlefields, Gettysburg is surrounded by natural beauty: Michaux State Forest, the Appalachian Trail and three state parks. Top that off with a fabulous wine trail and a hot new food scene, and you\u2019ve got the makings of a great vacation.<\/p>\n<h1><strong>The Gettysburg Battlefield<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>When people first hear the name Gettysburg, minds swiftly try to fathom the bloodshed in those three famous days of July 1863. Incomprehensible to most, 51,000 died and the town was devastated. Today, through a wonderful reconstruction and restoration, people can come and learn about those events in a variety of ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"removed_link\" heard complaint) and had to see as much as possible in a short amount of time, so we opted for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/gett\/planyourvisit\/upload\/GETT%20brochure.pdf\">self-driving tour<\/a> of the battlefield.\u00a0 Be sure to pick up the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/gett\/planyourvisit\/upload\/GETT%20brochure.pdf\">free map<\/a> at the Ranger Station as you enter the park for great background on the sites you\u2019ll be seeing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"et_pb_slider et_pb_slider_fullwidth_off et_pb_gallery_post_type\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slides\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Gettysburg-5861.jpg);\"><\/div><div Cemetery<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>Just on the outskirts of town, you find the Soldiers National Cemetery on Taneytown Road.\u00a0 No vehicles are allowed in the cemetery, but parking is available just on the other side of the road.<\/p>\n<p>It was here that Lincoln delivered his Gettysburg Address.\u00a0 After opening remarks by Edward Everett, which went on for two hours, Lincoln stepped up and delivered his 272-word speech in two minutes. \u00a0Guess whose remarks were remembered?<\/p>\n<div class=\"et_pb_slider et_pb_slider_fullwidth_off et_pb_gallery_post_type\">\n\t\t\t\t<div
