{"id":13020,"date":"2015-03-02T00:46:15","date_gmt":"2015-03-02T05:46:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/?p=13020"},"modified":"2015-03-02T00:46:15","modified_gmt":"2015-03-02T05:46:15","slug":"county-galway-half-way-there","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/county-galway-half-way-there\/","title":{"rendered":"County Galway \u2013 Half way there"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The county of Galway is about the mid-point of the <a href=\"http:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/2014\/06\/23\/secrets-irelands-wild-atlantic-way\/\">Wild Atlantic Way<\/a>\u00a0(WAW) and is home to both Galway City and the beautiful, but rugged Connemara Coast. This area is known to have the largest Gaeltacht Irish-speaking population in all of Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>A major tourist spot along the WAW is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kylemoreabbeytourism.ie\/\">Kylemore Abbey<\/a> with its\u00a0exquisite Victorian walled gardens. We didn\u2019t have time to tour, but this is on my bucket list for next time I\u2019m in the area.<\/p>\n<div class=\"et_pb_slider et_pb_slider_fullwidth_off et_pb_gallery_post_type\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slides\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Galway-2654.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Galway-2648.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Galway-2644.jpg);\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We spent the night at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clifdenstationhouse.com\/\">modern Clifden Station House Hotel<\/a> and were within walking distance to the fabulous <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abbeyglen.ie\/\">Abbeyglen Castle Hotel<\/a> and restaurant where we had a great meal complete with entertainment. They even set out a throne chair for their guests who want selfies in all their royal splendor.<\/p>\n<div class=\"et_pb_slider et_pb_slider_fullwidth_off et_pb_gallery_post_type\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slides\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Galway-8677.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Galway-8680.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Galway-8697.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Galway-8708.jpg);\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>One of County Galway\u2019s more interesting towns is <a href=\"http:\/\/clifden.galway-ireland.ie\/\">Clifden,<\/a> which is known as the Capital of Connemara.\u00a0 Founded in 1812, by John D\u2019Arcy, Clifden gained some notoriety when Marconi built his first transatlantic telegraphy station four miles outside of town.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Galway-2736.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-13028\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Galway-2736-600x400.jpg?resize=600%2C400\" alt=\"Clifden, Ireland\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A scenic section of the Wild Atlantic Way is called Sky Road and offers great views of the Atlantic as well as John D\u2019Arcy\u2019s now abandoned castle.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"et_pb_slider et_pb_slider_fullwidth_off et_pb_gallery_post_type\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slides\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Galway-2718.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Galway-2700.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Galway-2696.jpg);\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>Further south is a picturesque little fishing village called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.roundstone-connemara.com\/\">Roundstone<\/a>.\u00a0 Definitely worth a stop, Roundstone is known for its large artist population.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"et_pb_slider et_pb_slider_fullwidth_off et_pb_gallery_post_type\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slides\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Galway-2778.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Galway-2793.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Galway-2794.jpg);\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>Continuing southward, another 90 minutes, you\u2019ll arrive in the thriving metropolis of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.discoverireland.ie\/places-to-go\/galway\">Galway City<\/a>.\u00a0 With a much more urban flair, you&#8217;ll discover countless shopping and dining opportunities.\u00a0 This is the Republic of Ireland\u2019s fourth largest city and considered the cultural capital of Ireland by many. 20% of its 75,000 population are students.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Galway-2899.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large href=\"http:\/\/www.mcdonaghs.net\/\">McDonagh\u2019s of Ireland<\/a> for lunch and after waiting in line with all the locals, were delighted with our large servings of fish and chips.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"et_pb_slider et_pb_slider_fullwidth_off et_pb_gallery_post_type\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slides\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Galway-2908.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Galway-2904.jpg);\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>Sightseeing abounds and we were treated to a walking tour with Historian Extraordinaire, <a href=\"http:\/\/galwayprivatetours.com\/\">Conor O\u2019Riordan<\/a>. \u00a0One of the most impressive structures is the St. Nicholas Cathedral.
