It\u2019s the day of the Ottawa VeloFest downtown, and there are some sites I definitely want to see.<\/p>\n<p>Heading downtown, I\u2019m already impressed with the number of bike lanes everywhere. I had heard that Ottawa might be the best biking city in Canada, and with over 300 km of special bikepaths available, this is looking pretty nice.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/2012\/06\/05\/the-great-ontario-to-quebec-via-rail-2012-biking-adventure-day-four\/rideaulocks\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1950\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1950\" title=\"RideauLocks\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/RideauLocks-600x394.jpg?resize=600%2C394\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/RideauLocks.jpg?resize=600%2C394&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/RideauLocks.jpg?resize=300%2C197&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/RideauLocks.jpg?w=1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s too early for the VeloFest, so I head down the Rideau Canal toward the Ottawa Locks. At the bottom of the locks sits the Commissariat Building which now houses the Bytown Museum. Originally constructed in 1827, it served the men building the canal. It\u2019s off to <a href=\"http:\/\/byward-market.com\/\">Byward Market in Lowertown<\/a>. Established in 1826, this is one of Canada\u2019s oldest and largest public markets.\u00a0 Managed by the City of Ottawa since almost the beginning, it serves residents and vistors alike with over 500 retail establishments. From flower and fruit vendors to upscale arts and crafts, there is sure to be plenty of interest for any shopper.<\/p>\n<p>I wheel up to the counter of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beavertailsinc.com\/\">BeaverTails<\/a>, home of a huge pastry typically covered with cinnamon and sugar. Going for something a little different,\u00a0 I ordered the Maple Butter BeaverTail, which is almost like eating a hand-held pancake, dripping with melted, maple\u00a0 icing. Yummy. Messy. Yummy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/2012\/06\/05\/the-great-ontario-to-quebec-via-rail-2012-biking-adventure-day-four\/rideau-falls\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1948\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1948\" title=\"Rideau Falls\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Rideau-Falls-600x398.jpg?resize=600%2C398\" alt=\"Rideau Falls\" width=\"600\" height=\"398\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Rideau-Falls.jpg?resize=600%2C398&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Rideau-Falls.jpg?resize=300%2C199&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Rideau-Falls.jpg?w=1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Recharged, it\u2019s off to see Rideau Falls. Heading east on Sussex, I cross the Rideau River (separate and distinct from the Rideau Canal) and pull into the park to get some pictures. The twin set of waterfalls resemble a curtain, which in French is \u2018rideau\u2019, which gave the river its name.\u00a0 Falling 30 feet into the Ottawa River, it is a highlight for many tourists who take river cruises. While I was there, one of the cruise boats navigated itself within just an arm\u2019s length of the falls so tourists could be covered by the mist while trying to snap a water-logged photo.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/2012\/06\/05\/the-great-ontario-to-quebec-via-rail-2012-biking-adventure-day-four\/ottawariver\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1947\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1947\" title=\"OttawaRiver\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/OttawaRiver-600x287.jpg?resize=600%2C287\" alt=\"OttawaRiver\" width=\"600\" height=\"287\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/OttawaRiver.jpg?resize=600%2C287&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/OttawaRiver.jpg?resize=300%2C143&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/OttawaRiver.jpg?w=1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Picking up another bike path, I\u2019m heading for Rockcliffe Park, overlooking the meeting of the Ottawa River and the Gatineau River (from Quebec). Some information boards at the look-out tell the story of the Trans-Canadian Highway (of water.)\u00a0 Did you know you could follow the rivers and lakes of Canada all the way from the Atlantic to the Pacific \u2013 over 8,000 kms and then up to the Artic. That my friends is one helluva highway.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/2012\/06\/05\/the-great-ontario-to-quebec-via-rail-2012-biking-adventure-day-four\/rideau-hall\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1949\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1949\" title=\"Rideau Hall\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Rideau-Hall-600x397.jpg?resize=600%2C397\" alt=\"Rideau Hall\" width=\"600\" height=\"397\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Rideau-Hall.jpg?resize=600%2C397&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Rideau-Hall.jpg?resize=300%2C198&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Rideau-Hall.jpg?w=1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>Heading east, next stop was Rideau Hall- home of the Canada\u2019s Governor-General. Originally it was built as the home for the masonry contractor who had the contract to build the locks on the Rideau Canal back in the early 1800\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Today, this 11-room mansion sits on 32 hectares (79 acres) of beautiful wooded grounds. Modeled after a typical English country estate, there are multiple paths, formal gardens and over 10,000 trees, many of which have be planted by visiting heads of State, members of the Royal Family or other dignitaries.<\/p>\n<p>Pick up a brochure and give yourself a self-guided tour. Don\u2019t miss one of my favorites, the Inuksuk (pronounced inook-shook) just inside the gate to the left\u00a0 It\u2019s a massive stone monument, popular in the artic for messaging and wayfinding. More recently, it was the symbol of the \u00a0most recent Olympic games.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s starting to pour once again, so it\u2019s off to the Courtyard, pack up and head out on my next leg of the VIA Rail bike train adventure to Montreal. Looking forward to participating in their 50 km Le Tour de L\u2019ile de Montreal.
