Testing it out, I was impressed with both its speed and the quality of its scans. The feature list appeared very attractive so I was eager to try it out. Using the CD proved to be impossible. Yes, I do have a CD drive on my desktop machine, but despite repeated attempts, it would not read the CD provided in the package.<\/p>\n<p>I worked around it, and for those of you who don\u2019t even have a CD drive, go to <a href=\"http:\/\/plustek.com\/us\/products\/film_photo_scanners\/ephoto_z300\/support.php\">http:\/\/plustek.com\/us\/products\/film_photo_scanners\/ephoto_z300\/support.php<\/a> and download the appropriate Windows or Mac file.\u00a0 Unzip that file and run the setup file. Here\u2019s where the fun started.\u00a0 First I got a warning message:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/2016-10-24_2311.png\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25044\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/2016-10-24_2311.png?resize=340%2C178\" alt=\"2016-10-24_2311\" width=\"340\" height=\"178\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/2016-10-24_2311.png?w=340&amp;ssl=1 340w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/2016-10-24_2311.png?resize=150%2C79&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/2016-10-24_2311.png?resize=300%2C157&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 340px) 100vw, 340px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hmmm.\u00a0 I hadn\u2019t even attached the scanner, so I assumed I needn\u2019t worry.\u00a0 Attaching and powering up the scanner, I then had to repeatedly click through screen after screen to calibrate the scanner.<\/p>\n<div class=\"et_pb_slider et_pb_slider_fullwidth_off et_pb_gallery_post_type\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slides\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/2016-10-24_2319.png);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/2016-10-24_2323.png);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/2016-10-24_2323_001.png);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/2016-10-24_2324.png);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/2016-10-24_2324_001.png);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/2016-10-24_2326.png);\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p><b>Phew, now we can scan<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Finally, I was ready to scan.\u00a0 Sending four documents through, one at a time, I then went looking for the scanned files. I could see the thumbnails of the scanned images but couldn\u2019t find the files anywhere. \u00a0They just weren\u2019t there \u2013 nowhere to be found???<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/2016-10-25_0659.png\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-25051\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/2016-10-25_0659-900x517.png?resize=900%2C517\" alt=\"2016-10-25_0659\" width=\"900\" height=\"517\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/2016-10-25_0659.png?resize=900%2C517&amp;ssl=1 900w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/2016-10-25_0659.png?resize=150%2C86&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/2016-10-25_0659.png?resize=300%2C172&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/2016-10-25_0659.png?resize=768%2C441&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/2016-10-25_0659.png?w=1001&amp;ssl=1 1001w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then I realized I needed to first click the diskette icon in the upper left to save the files to my hard drive.<\/p>\n<p>Pulling down on the triangle to the right of the diskette, I could select the file type I wanted them saved to, (JPEG, PDF, BMP, TIFF or PNG) but they would all be saved to the same type format.\u00a0 If you want a couple in one format and a couple others in another format, you best scan them and save them separately. When you hit save, they all get saved as the same format and disappear from the interface.<\/p>\n<p>The Z300\u2019s software enables you to perform all sorts of editing to your scans, but once you save the image, it disappears from the scanning application.\u00a0 That\u2019s problematic in my view.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/plustek-adjustments.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-25056\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/plustek-adjustments-900x637.jpg?resize=900%2C637\" alt=\"plustek-adjustments\" width=\"900\" height=\"637\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/plustek-adjustments.jpg?w=900&amp;ssl=1 900w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/plustek-adjustments.jpg?resize=150%2C106&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/plustek-adjustments.jpg?resize=300%2C212&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/plustek-adjustments.jpg?resize=768%2C544&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If I wanted to save a scan as a color file, and also save a version as a greyscale image, I\u2019d have to rescan it for the second format. \u00a0A &#8220;Save As&#8221; option would sure be handy.<\/p>\n<p><b>But, there definitely is a bright side<\/b><\/p>\n<p>On the plus side, the scanner is inexpensive, small and does a good job at scanning photos.<\/p>\n<p>If you are looking for a photo scanner, and you don\u2019t mind feeding your photos one at a time, the machine is <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/42GiYTq\">available on Amazon <\/a>for just $199.<\/p>\n<p>If you have limited space, this is perfect.\u00a0 Look how much smaller the <strong>Plustek ePhoto Z300<\/strong> is than my previous Epson Workforce 7520.\u00a0 The Epson also prints, but it takes up a ton of room on a desktop. Full-size sheets scanned in about five seconds and smaller photos and cards went through in much less time.<\/p>\n<p>I tried scanning photos, greeting cards, business cards, a thick plastic driver\u2019s license, credit cards, and thin paper receipts.\u00a0 All went through quickly and effortlessly.\u00a0 The software does an admirable job of sensing the edges and aligning the image vertically before it crops the resulting scan.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/2016-10-26_1032.png\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-25057\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/2016-10-26_1032-900x362.png?resize=900%2C362\" alt=\"2016-10-26_1032\" width=\"900\" height=\"362\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/2016-10-26_1032.png?resize=900%2C362&amp;ssl=1 900w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/2016-10-26_1032.png?resize=150%2C60&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/2016-10-26_1032.png?resize=300%2C121&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/2016-10-26_1032.png?resize=768%2C309&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/2016-10-26_1032.png?w=1990&amp;ssl=1 1990w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Quality of the scans were every bit as good as my more expensive and much bigger Epson flatbed scanner.\u00a0 The only thing I missed was the option to scan at more than one resolution.\u00a0 The Z300 scans everything at 300 d.p.i. and the resolution option is greyed out, so it doesn\u2019t appear that it can be changed.
