One of our biggest foodie surprises was our visit to Gettysburg<\/a> a few years back. The area obviously is incredibly steeped in history, but we had no idea how awesome the food, the ciders, and the wines<\/a> would be.\u00a0 Reports are in, and it’s gotten even better.<\/p>\n

Here, thanks to the kind folks at Destination Gettysburg<\/a> are some ways to celebrate this great area on Memorial Day and beyond.<\/p>\n

Gettysburg was just recently named one of the most\u00a0affordable Memorial Day destinations<\/a>\u00a0by TravelPulse, MSN.com <\/span>and Priceline.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
For 151 years, Gettysburg has been holding the\u00a0Annual Gettysburg Memorial Day Parade<\/a>, making it one of the longest running ceremonies in the country. This popular parade includes military vehicles, veterans, re-enactors and marching bands. The parade weaves through town all the way to Soldiers’ National Cemetery where the Memorial Day ceremony will continue.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Memorial Day also marks the start of “One Hundred Nights of Taps<\/a>,”<\/span> a program that runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day in Gettysburg National Cemetery. The 24-note call is sounded every evening at 7 p.m. to honor those who have served the nation, and is played by military veterans, re-enactors, community band members, students and music teachers.<\/div>\n

Most people celebrate Memorial Day with a patriotic picnic, and most of those picnics include barbecue. Gettysburg can now provide both the patriotism and the barbecue with the new\u00a0Gettysburg BBQ Festival<\/a>, which will include world class barbecue, barbecue related events and live entertainment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“Gettysburg is a great place to reflect on and celebrate Memorial Day,” said Norris Flowers, President of Destination Gettysburg. “A great lineup of events and activities accompany one of the country’s longest running ceremonies, making for a great Memorial Day weekend getaway.”<\/div>\n

There’s a lot to look forward to in Gettysburg this summer and Memorial Day kick starts it all.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Of course, the\u00a0155th Annual Gettysburg Civil War Re-enactment<\/a>\u00a0is<\/span> a big draw. From July 5-8, thousands of re-enactors will descend on Gettysburg and recreate the biggest battle of the Civil War.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
Living History events and groups will set up camp throughout Gettysburg after Memorial Day, teaching visitors about the battle, how soldiers lived during that time and many other special topics.<\/div>\n

In addition to history, summertime in Gettysburg features many craft beverage festivals and culinary events throughout the season that give visitors a literal taste of Adams County.<\/div>\n
