Boi, which is the Portugese word for ox, is the main character in three nights of folklore presentations in the Brumbodromo (stadium built for the Boi Bumba.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">While many people attend Carnival in Rio de Janeiro each year, the Boi Bumba celebration is actually the second largest festival in all of Brazil. Many other towns have similar festivals, but Parintins hosts the biggest and most impressive of all.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">With incredible displays and costumes, the folk tale of Boi Bumba is re-enacted nightly for three consecutive evenings by two teams.\u00a0 The blue team called <em><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif';\">Caprichoso<\/span><\/em> (<em><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif';\">cah-pree-show-zol<\/span><\/em>) tries to outdo the performance by the red team called <em><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif';\">Garantido<\/span><\/em> (<em><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri','sans-serif';\">gah-run-tee-dow<\/span><\/em>). After three nights of non-stop music, dance, singing, fireworks, parades, giant puppets and story-telling; judges determine a winner. The winner of this year\u2019s event, was Garantido, the red team, winning by 2\/10\u2019s of a point.<\/div>\n<p><center><\/center><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Last year Caprichoso won the event, but this year, the red team seemed more energetic, and their performance was electric from start until finish Saturday night when this writer was in attendance.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-Y7uF3XaYrbY\/ThTJlJfLwsI\/AAAAAAAAAf4\/7UUbOM1skXg\/s1600\/110625_DSC6284.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-Y7uF3XaYrbY\/ThTJlJfLwsI\/AAAAAAAAAf4\/7UUbOM1skXg\/s320\/110625_DSC6284.jpg?resize=212%2C320\" width=\"212\" height=\"320\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Judges look for creativity in costuming, dance, music and audience participation. The town is split into two opposing factions and each team occupies exactly one half of the stadium. From the time their people start to perform on the stadium floor, the audience is non-stop motion as well. They sing, they sway back and forth, holding noise makers and signs; all to the choreography of the fan leaders. The opposing fans sit in absolute silence during the other team\u2019s performance, so as to not give them any advantage. Opposite factions will not even speak the name of the other team, referring to them as \u201cthe others.\u201d (Reminds me of the traditional rivalry in the U.S. of Ohio State and Michigan State college football.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">In this year\u2019s event, the giant backdrops were wheeled into the stadium, one after another. Some were probably 30-feet in the air and always transformed themselves into something more than what originally met the eye. Often the pieces would open at the height of the music to display a beautiful dancer, who was eventually lowered to the ground and came dancing out to the delight of the crowd. Costumes were incredibly lavish with feathers and flowers almost unimaginable in size and color.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-sPlIZtGwjtc\/ThTJhOlPiQI\/AAAAAAAAAfw\/GB2AaPlAZno\/s1600\/110625_DSC5000.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-sPlIZtGwjtc\/ThTJhOlPiQI\/AAAAAAAAAfw\/GB2AaPlAZno\/s320\/110625_DSC5000.jpg?resize=320%2C212\" width=\"320\" height=\"212\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>See the slide show for pictures from the 2011 Boi Bumba festival. It\u2019s an incredible musical and theatrical event you won\u2019t want to miss. Can\u2019 t make it the last weekend of June? Fret not. The locals restage the event every time a cruise ship docks in Parantins. Often performers will be dancing right at the docks, and a very short trip will allow you to watch a re-enactment performance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">Cruise ships that stop in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.parintins.com\/\">Parintins<\/a> this year include: Oceania Cruises, Azamara Club Cruises, Holland America, Princess Cruises, &amp; Sea Dream Yacht Club.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\">If you go, you need to know:<\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Boi Bumba is always held on the last weekend in June.<\/li>\n<li>Many locals wait all day in line for free admission to the show, but if you are willing to purchase a ticket, you can get in without waiting, and you\u2019ll get preferred seating as well.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.parintins.com\/\">Parintins<\/a> is a town of roughly 115,000 people that swells by 35,000 on the Boi Bumba weekend.
