Not only that, it takes up less than two square feet of space next to our kitchen patio door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/210226-2024-1024-600x900.jpg?resize=600%2C900&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34587\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/210226-2024-1024-600x900.jpg 600w, https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/210226-2024-1024-480x720.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 600px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>After seeing the product at CES, I spoke with FX Rouxel, Gardyn\u2019s creator and CEO. He dispelled several reservations I had about the viability of actually growing enough product to make it worth the investment of time and energy. Some of the great points he made:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/mygardyn.com\/technology\/\">Through the use of hydroponics and the IoT<\/a>, there is almost no work involved to start and maintain your garden. With hydronics, water is recycled over and over, saving as much as 95% compared to watering an outdoor garden.<\/li><li>You can grow almost anything other than root vegetables or trees. They have more than three dozen vegetables, fruits, herbs and flowers you can choose from (and they are adding more each month) \u2013 and you can mix and match to your heart\u2019s content.<\/li><li>Through the smartphone app you install, you are literally held by the hand with reminders whenever it\u2019s time to add water or plant food\u2026and even when it\u2019s time to start harvesting.<\/li><li>We keep our house pretty cool in the wintertime, so I feared that would be an issue, but FX explained that anywhere people are comfortable, the Gardyn will be also.\u00a0<\/li><li>Miniature LED lights provide all the light the plants need, and the large water tank at the base pumps water to each of the \u201cpods\u201d a couple times a day.<\/li><li>If you are going away, the garden can be set on vacation mode. On-board cameras even let you check in on your garden while traveling.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Don\u2019t plant \u2013 build your garden<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/1024-Boxes-needed-for-Gardyn-900x900.png?resize=900%2C900&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34593\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I was sold, and two boxes arrived shortly thereafter.&nbsp; One included the four-foot long light fixtures and the other had all the other components.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mygardyn.com\/how-it-works\/\">The assembly<\/a> took maybe a half-hour and went exceedingly well. The only part that gave me any pause was hooking up the little right-angle connectors for the hoses.&nbsp; I was concerned about possibly breaking them as I forced the hose onto the connectors, but my fears were unfounded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The kit came with 30 pods which each come ready to place in the holders.\u00a0 The seeds are already in a bed of Rockwool, which takes the place of soil, so there\u2019s no talent needed to \u201cplant\u201d your Gardyn.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/210123-Pana6303-1024-900x675.jpg?resize=900%2C675&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34592\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p> After placing the pods, it was just a matter of loading the tank with water, plugging it into an outlet, and flipping the switch to \u201cOn\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/6-different-plants-1024-900x506.png?resize=900%2C506&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34594\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For the first ten days, there was literally nothing else to do other than watch as the 30 young plants began to sprout.\u00a0 After that, I got a notification on my phone that it was time to add plant food, (which was included in the original box.)\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simply diluting one measure of food in some water really seemed to be the trick that started everything moving.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/600-4x4-progress-1.gif?resize=600%2C600&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34591\"\/><figcaption>One week, two weeks, three weeks, four weeks<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>By one month, we were ready to start harvesting and enjoying a truly fresh salad.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/210226-2037-1024-900x600.jpg?resize=900%2C600&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34588\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And we\u2019ve been harvesting and harvesting every few days ever since.\u00a0 Just last week, on one day alone, I bagged \u00be of a pound of lettuce and other greens for my daughter.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"866\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/210312-PXL5-180237901-1024-866x900.jpg?resize=866%2C900&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34596\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>FX said to expect each Gardyn to produce 8 to 10 pounds of produce each month, and I\u2019m guessing he\u2019s right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/210305-PXL5-173653096-1024-900x675.jpg?resize=900%2C675&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34595\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While I have been having a salad a day for years now, I was pretty much in a rut, buying the same four or five ingredients each and every week.\u00a0 I never knew there were so many choices out there. Romaine was always my go-to variety, but I never knew, and my local groceries never carried, all the many varieties of Romaine that really make my salads interesting now.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Oops<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The other day, I happened to accidentally pour Ranch dressing on my salad. I thought I was grabbing the Poppyseed, but by the time my brain kicked in, it was too late. Now, I consider Ranch dressing to be one of the blandest and most boring varieties in existence and would never have used it, had I been paying attention. So, the only thing to do was to spice it up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"264\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/No-not-Ranch-1024-900x264.jpg?resize=900%2C264&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34600\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I went over to the Gardyn and cut off a few leaves of Arugula, Basil and Thyme. I then cut them up into small pieces and mixed them around and into the entire salad.&nbsp; What an amazing difference those few leaves made \u2013 the salad was actually very enjoyable again \u2013 and nothing was wasted. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Do your budgeting and make the investment<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Gardyn has a number of ways to get started and to stay engaged with indoor gardening.\u00a0 There are even payment plans to spread out the cost of getting started over 12 or 24 months.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s no doubt that <a href=\"https:\/\/mygardyn.com\/gardyn-membership\/\">it\u2019s an investment<\/a> to get started gardening with the Gardyn, but if you love salad as much as I do, you\u2019ll never regret the purchase.\u00a0 To help you get started, here are a few of my tips learned from the first month or so of Gardyn-ing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" style=\"font-size:2px\"><li><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Follow the instructions!\u00a0 Don\u2019t add plant food until the seeds have had a chance to sprout \u2013 the app will tell when to add food for the first time. Luckily, I followed the instructions, and every single pod is growing well now.<\/li><li>After two weeks I was getting a tad anxious, nothing was close to being ready to pick.\u00a0 But wait patiently, in another couple weeks the progress was nothing less than amazing! Now I am cutting and enjoying fresh greens just about every day.<\/li><li>If you are into herbs, they are the slowest growing, so don\u2019t expect to be picking mint, cilantro, chives, etc. until well into the second 30 days of growing.\u00a0 Lettuce is much, MUCH more fast-growing.<\/li><li>If you are trying to figure where you can put it, it needs an electric outlet, but it\u2019s only 24\u201d wide, 64\u201d tall, and sticks out from the wall about 18\u201d.\u00a0 That\u2019s less than two square feet of floor space.<\/li><li>Make sure you have a slender pair of gardening shears so you can clip certain large leaves from the outside of each plant while still leaving the small leaves in the center to keep growing.<\/li><li>If you join the membership plan, you will get 10 new pods each month which will easily give you the opportunity to try all the different vegetables, herbs, fruits, and flowers they offer.<\/li><li>Other advantages to the membership plans include sizable discounts on future pod purchases, automated reminders from \u201cKelby\u201d the virtual assistant, a \u201cvacation mode\u201d that slows the growing progress while you are away, and access to Gardyn\u2019s plant tech people to answer any of your questions.<\/li><li>Read the \u201cWhat you grow\u201d section of their website which tells you so much about the plants, how to harvest them and how to use them in various recipes.\u00a0 (This is even worthwhile checking before you order \u2013 Warning \u2013 this alone will likely hook you on the possibilities.) \u00a0<\/li><li>Winter is the perfect time to start some flowers.\u00a0 When warm weather finally arrives, you can take the pods out and place them in your garden to continue growing, but you\u2019ll already have something green on day one to enjoy.\u00a0 The pods are biodegradable, so no worry.\u00a0 Just water them generously when first transplanting\u2026they\u2019ve become used to getting watered twice daily in the Gardyn.<\/li><li>My wife discovered that not only do the lights work for plants growing in the Gardyn, they also work for houseplants growing next to it.
