Of course, I\u2019m referring to <em>shooting pictures<\/em> of the birds.<\/p>\n<p>We arrived early in the morning and were shuttled to the boat launching area by auto-rickshaw. Getting there is always half the adventure. Arriving at the launch, a quick perusal of the skiffs we would be riding showed that more than half were leaking anywhere from a little to a lot. We all piled in and we <!--more-->were off.\u00a0 Our previous\u00a0advisers\u00a0had been correct, and if you go, you\u2019ll definitely want to get there at sunrise when the birds are feeding and most active.<\/p>\n<p>Whole flocks of birds circled around as we pushed off. The sun rose in time to for us to catch a couple early morning shots of them circling above. But then activity dropped off, precipitously.<\/p>\n<p>As we were pushed around for four hours on the lake, it became obvious that these were \u201csight-seeing\u201d pushers, not bird hounds. We spent hours away from shore, in the middle of the lake with not a bird in sight. We tried to point to shore, but our pusher kept heading for open water???<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/2012\/11\/28\/shooting-birds-in-india\/nalsarovar-9134\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3869\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3869\" title=\"NalSarovar-9134\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/NalSarovar-9134-300x180.jpg?resize=300%2C180\" alt=\"White heron lifts off from Nal Sarovar Lake\" width=\"300\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/NalSarovar-9134.jpg?resize=300%2C180&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/NalSarovar-9134.jpg?resize=150%2C90&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/NalSarovar-9134.jpg?resize=600%2C361&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/NalSarovar-9134.jpg?w=1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>That did however, give us time to bail out the water that kept leaking in the bottom of the boat. (There\u2019s always a bright side.)<\/p>\n<p>As we returned, we discovered that there were more than 210 known species of birds frequenting this 123 square kilometer lake during the winter months. Interpreted into language I understand, that means we missed more than 201 of them. \u00a0No Rosy Pelicans, no White Storks, no Brahminy Ducks.<\/p>\n<p>What we did see were plenty of herons, ducks, seagulls and an occasional sandpiper.\u00a0 Hmmm, same birds I see at home.<\/p>\n[Caution, your mileage may vary. We talked with other photogs later that saw five times as many species as we did.
