Locally, I am used to having bike lanes painted along the side of the road as an afterthought.<\/p>\n<p>When the bike lanes meet a bridge or a road narrowing, guess what disappears or gets so narrow that you can\u2019t find it? Of course, it\u2019s the bike path that comes out second. In Taiwan, by contrast, when the path meets a stream, it gets its own bridge. They\u2019ve even built overpasses so one can bike over the freeways. This is a country that \u201cgets it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the entire island of Taiwan is only a 1\/3 larger than Maryland, it offers a multitude of riding destinations. From casual ride to exerting hill climbs, you can find whatever you are looking for in Taiwan. And if you\u2019re visiting, you\u2019ll find lots of bike rental shops to equip you for the ride.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/2012\/02\/29\/top-places-to-ride-taiwan\/111111img_1685h\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-866\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-866\" title=\"111111IMG_1685H\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/111111IMG_1685H-220x300.jpg?resize=220%2C300\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/111111IMG_1685H.jpg?resize=220%2C300&amp;ssl=1 220w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/111111IMG_1685H.jpg?w=594&amp;ssl=1 594w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 220px) 100vw, 220px\" \/><\/a>All around Taiwan, you\u2019ll find dozens of bike routes laid out with either urban or coastal routes. The routes will typically have a bike shop somewhere close for supplies or service and will take you to scenic destinations you\u2019ll never see on a tour bus. \u00a0Taipei now operates a total of 10 \u201csupply stations\u201d in the city\u2019s riverside parks, where you can quench your thirst, borrow air pumps or take advantage of simple repair services, free of charge.<\/p>\n<p>Want to ride in the city? You can pick up a bike in the busy Xinyi District from any of 11 YouBike rental locations where for a minimal fee you can ride a bike and only pay in 15 minute increments. Passing beautiful mountain farms and greenery, it\u2019s nothing but straight up \u2013 for miles and miles. The downhill is amazing, but first you\u2019ve got to make the summit. If you\u2019re up for it, this challenge will test your stamina.<\/p>\n<p>Looking for drop-dead gorgeous scenery, you\u2019ll want to ride the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.taroko.gov.tw\/English\/?mm=0&amp;sm=0&amp;page=3\">Taroko Gorge<\/a>.\u00a0 Following the river through this amazing marble gorge, you\u2019ll see rock face walls like none you\u2019ve seen before. Throw in a couple wonderfully colorful temples and you\u2019ll have a hard time deciding \u2013 take pictures or enjoy the ride? Two of the more well-known are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yohobikehotel.com.tw\/eng\/bikehotel-about-10.html\">Yoho Bike Hotel<\/a> in Kenting and the <span class=\"removed_link\" title=\"http:\/\/www.naruwan-inn.com.tw\/rooms.php\">Formosan Naruwan Hotel<\/span> in Taitung. How about stopping for a cup of coffee? Check out Taipei\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.frogfree.com\/\">Frog Caf\u00e9<\/a> where you hang you bike as you enter. Inside you can relax amidst a gallery of ever changing artwork. It might be photographs of someone\u2019s latest bike adventure or it might be a retro art display. It\u2019ll always be something interesting as the shop\u2019s owners are avid bikers and photographers.<\/p>\n<p>Given the chance, I\u2019d always add a two-wheel component to any travel I do.
