Doolin is what you get when a seaside village meets a barren limestone landscape. Rugged beauty \u2013 yes. Crazy caves \u2013 check. Quaint little cottages \u2013 yep.<\/p>\n

Doolin<\/h1>\n

\"Doonagore<\/a><\/p>\n

Following the signs for the Wild Atlantic Way, as you crest the hill coming down into Doolin, your eye is immediately drawn to an old 16th<\/sup>-century tower house called Doonagore Castle that sits overlooking the landscape. It was restored in the 1970\u2019s by a private developer and is presently a private property, so it can only be admired from the road.<\/p>\n

\"Doolin\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The homes in Doolin are some of the brightest around, many sporting thatched roofs.<\/p>\n

Coastal Walk<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\"Ireland-4272\"<\/a><\/p>\n

You\u2019re now in the area of County Clare that comprises the northern end of the Cliffs of Moher Coastal Walk.\u00a0 From here you can hike to Liscannor via the Cliffs of Moher if you are up for it.\u00a0 Beautiful Buren landscapes are visible to those who take this path by foot.\u00a0 No vehicles allowed. Total walk is 20 km.\u00a0 It\u2019s 8 km from here just to the Cliffs of Moher.<\/p>\n

Want to see the largest stalactite in the northern hemisphere?\u00a0 It\u2019s hanging out in\u00a0 Doolin Cave (Pol An Ionain) and can be seen on a guided tour below ground. If you are uncomfortable climbing 120 stairs or bending over \u2013 you might want to stay topside and enjoy a cup of tea in their dining area.<\/p>\n

The Great Stalactite – 23 feet tall.<\/p><\/div>\n

You\u2019ll don a construction worker’s hardhat for the tour below ground, as the ceiling clearance is constantly changing.\u00a0 Lucky thing, because I bashed my head into the rock ceiling on five separate occasions.<\/p>\n

\"Ireland-4364\"<\/a><\/p>\n

That\u2019s just me though \u2013 nobody else did \u2013 not even once.\u00a0 I just have a thing about not looking above the brim of my cap \u2013 hence I\u2019m beating my brains in everywhere there is a low hanging anything. Luckily, the hard hat did the job and I came out unscathed.<\/p>\n

\"Watch<\/a>

Watch your head – I didn’t.<\/p><\/div>\n

That said, it\u2019s worth the trip to see this monster stalactite.\u00a0 Hard to believe this 23 foot tall, chandelier-like object was formed drop-by-drop by water leaking from the ceiling of this cave.<\/p>\n

\"The<\/a>

The water continues to drip so the stalactite continues to grow.<\/p><\/div>\n

Further into the cave you\u2019ll find mini stalactites and an underground river flowing through the cave.<\/p>\n

\"Doolin<\/a>

Up top, a farmland nature trail will appeal the youngsters and one admittance covers both the cave and the trail.<\/p>\n

Book your tickets on-line to save 20%\u00a0 http:\/\/www.doolincave.ie<\/a>\u00a0 Tours go out on the hour or half-hour depending on the season. \u00a0Bring a coat \u2013 it\u2019s always cool down there.<\/p>\n

\"Bunk<\/a>I just missed a tour, so I went back out to my Bunk Camper<\/a> and hung out there for 45 minutes, having a snack and plotting the rest of the day\u2019s activities.\u00a0 That\u2019s one of the advantages of a campervan, you\u2019ve got comfortable seating, places to spread out your maps and tourbooks, and a hopefully a couple cold ones in the refrigerator.<\/p>\n

If the weather turns iffy, it\u2019s also a great place to wait out the storms. People get claustrophobic sitting in cars in the rain I\u2019ve noticed.\u00a0 There\u2019s none of that feeling in a campervan because you can get up, move around, use the restroom and even lay down and take a nap.<\/p>\n

In Ireland, often the storms are over in just a short time, so having a comfortable place to wait them out is priceless.\u00a0 (Get the details on where I rented my Bunk Camper<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

Ferry to the Aran Islands<\/p><\/div>\n

While you\u2019re still in Doolin, head down to the water\u2019s edge and catch a ferry to the Aran Islands. That\u2019s where we are off to next.<\/p>\n
