Just slightly further south along the <a href=\"http:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/2014\/06\/23\/secrets-irelands-wild-atlantic-way\/\">Wild Atlantic Way<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loophead.ie\/\">Loop Head Peninsula<\/a> has its own soaring sea cliffs, coastal walks, fascinating geology, beautiful lighthouse, historic battle towers, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueflagireland.org\/kilkee-co-clare\/beach-description.1017.html\">blue flag beach<\/a>\u2026and less crowds.<\/p>\n<p>So whether it was lack of PR or maybe the luck of the draw, it\u2019s nowhere near as well-known as its big brother\u2026but that can work to your advantage.\u00a0 No big buses with dozens disembarking at every photo opportunity.\u00a0 It also means you can go in to the corner deli, grab a great sub sandwich and only wait in line with the locals. Priceless.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ireland-4421.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9611\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ireland-4421-600x400.jpg?resize=600%2C400\" alt=\"Ireland-4421\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ireland-4421.jpg?resize=600%2C400&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ireland-4421.jpg?resize=150%2C100&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ireland-4421.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ireland-4421.jpg?resize=140%2C94&amp;ssl=1 140w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ireland-4421.jpg?w=1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As I drove down N67 from <a href=\"http:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/2014\/06\/26\/doolin-ireland-caves-castles-coastal-walks\/\">Doolin<\/a>, just after passing the Trump International Golf Links and Hotel entrance with the three flags, I took a right turn on the next road with the Wild Atlantic Way sign pointing to Doughmore Bay. You parallel the Creegh River as it flows to the sea and end up right at the main Trump facility \u2013 the beautiful Doughmore House (without using their driveway or valets).\u00a0 There\u2019s a small public parking lot there where you can leave your vehicle and set out to explore the mouth of the river and the beautiful beach.<\/p>\n<div class=\"et_pb_slider et_pb_slider_fullwidth_off et_pb_gallery_post_type\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slides\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ireland-4446.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ireland-4445.jpg);\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s interesting to see how the river goes from a lush green wrapped body of water inland to a rocky place as it filters into the Atlantic.\u00a0 The beach to its right seems to go on forever and people were kayaking and surfing the day I was there.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ireland-4434.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9612\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ireland-4434-600x206.jpg?resize=600%2C206\" alt=\"Beach at the Trump International Golf &amp; Resort\" width=\"600\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ireland-4434.jpg?resize=600%2C206&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ireland-4434.jpg?resize=150%2C51&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ireland-4434.jpg?resize=300%2C103&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ireland-4434.jpg?w=1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Just past the Doughmore Bay area is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loophead.ie\/irish-holiday-destination\/ireland-attractions-kilkee\/\">City of Kilkee<\/a> with its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueflagireland.org\/kilkee-co-clare\/beach-description.1017.html\">blue flag beach<\/a>. The beach gained popularity in the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century and is now encircled\u00a0with both old and new, colorful residences. This kilometer long beach is protected by Duggerna Reef some distance offshore, making it one of the most safe in County Clare. I debated making a quick change in my <a href=\"http:\/\/bunkcampers.com\/\">Bunk Camper<\/a> and going surfing, but I opted to keep pressing on. (It may have had something to do with not having a surf board\u2026or not knowing how to surf. \u00a0Hmmm. )<\/p>\n<div class=\"et_pb_slider et_pb_slider_fullwidth_off et_pb_gallery_post_type\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slides\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ireland-4452.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ireland-4454.jpg);\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>Being the biggest town on Loop\u2019s Head, Kilkee is a perfect place to grab a bite to eat, and I\u2019d recommend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Nolans-Deli\/104402519608037\">Nolan\u2019s Deli at 49 O\u2019Curry Street<\/a>.\u00a0 It\u2019s carryout only, but for <a href=\"http:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/2014\/06\/24\/bunk-campers-enable-travel-independently-ireland\/\">eating in the camper<\/a> or to save until you get to the lighthouse, they\u2019ve got an extensive list of made-to-order sandwiches and salads.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ireland-4461.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9617\" was off to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loophead.ie\/irish-holiday-destination\/irish-attractions-kilbaha\/\">Kilbaha<\/a> \u2013 overlooking the mouth of the Shannon River.\u00a0 With some of the most fascinating rock and vegetation formations, the shores were layer after layer of color as the ground wound its way down to the river.<\/p>\n<div class=\"et_pb_slider et_pb_slider_fullwidth_off et_pb_gallery_post_type\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slides\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ireland-5277.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ireland-4476.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ireland-4472.jpg);\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>One thing I missed while in Kilbaha was the \u201cLittle Ark,\u201d a moveable church on wheels that used to be hauled down to the beach at low tide, back in the days when the landowners wouldn\u2019t allow the Roman Catholic Church to purchase property.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loophead.ie\/ireland-attractions-the-little-ark\/\">It\u2019s a fascinating story you can read here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9609\" style=\"width: 610px\" href=\"http:\/\/www.loophead.ie\/what-to-see-in-ireland-loop-head-lighthouse\/\">Loop Head Lighthouse<\/a>.\u00a0 The lighthouse you\u2019ll see was built in 1854, but there\u2019s been a lighthouse here since 1670.\u00a0 Back then, a fire was built on the roof of a single-story cottage (which is part of the display on the lighthouse grounds.)<\/p>\n<div class=\"et_pb_slider et_pb_slider_fullwidth_off et_pb_gallery_post_type\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slides\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ireland-4562.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ireland-4506.jpg);\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>Open generally from April through August (and sometimes in September) you can tour the lighthouse and climb to a lookout platform for great views of the Shannon on one side and the Atlantic on the other.\u00a0 The tower is 23 meters tall and was automated in 1991 and can be seen for up to 23 miles. Admission is charged to enter the grounds.<\/p>\n<p>Outside the walled Lighthouse, the parking opens onto a spacious grass filled area where people were picnicking, frisbeeing and enjoying the wild flowers in the field. Find the right vantage points along the cliffs and you\u2019ll discover little secret beaches that can only be reached from the sea. A large seal seemed to be enjoying one the day I was there.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ireland-4522.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9626\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ireland-4522-400x600.jpg?resize=400%2C600\" alt=\"Ireland-4522\" width=\"400\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ireland-4522.jpg?resize=400%2C600&amp;ssl=1 400w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ireland-4522.jpg?resize=100%2C150&amp;ssl=1 100w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ireland-4522.jpg?resize=200%2C300&amp;ssl=1 200w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ireland-4522.jpg?w=683&amp;ssl=1 683w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The cliffs are a great place to spread out a blanket and enjoy that Nolan\u2019s Deli sandwich.
