{"id":9633,"date":"2014-06-30T16:41:36","date_gmt":"2014-06-30T20:41:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/?p=9633"},"modified":"2018-03-06T23:32:54","modified_gmt":"2018-03-07T04:32:54","slug":"ring-kerry-tour-done-right-way","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/ring-kerry-tour-done-right-way\/","title":{"rendered":"The Ring of Kerry tour done the right way"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Possibly one of the most popular bus tours is the Ring of Kerry in southwestern Ireland.\u00a0 Promising picturesque countrysides, exciting mountain roads and panoramic seaside vistas; it\u2019s got something that seems to appeal to everyone. Starting at Killarney, the typical tour takes a counter-clockwise tour of the Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry with stops at all the big roadside pulloffs for pictures and at some of the obligatory souvenir shops.<\/p>\n<p>While thousands upon thousands have done the Ring of Kerry that way, there\u2019s so much more to be seen if you travel it by yourself.\u00a0 That\u2019s why I resisted the urge to visit there, until I had a couple days to spend and until I had my own set of wheels.\u00a0 This year, piloting my own Bunk Camper motorhome, I could stop at any vista that appealed to me, and could stay as long as I liked. A single lane road paralleling the Bay follows the Wild Atlantic Way signs, but there\u2019s no room here for a big tour bus. Set near the westernmost portion of the Ring of Kerry, this is a great location for exploring Valentia Island and taking the ferry to the Skellig Islands.<\/p>\n<div class=\"et_pb_slider et_pb_slider_fullwidth_off et_pb_gallery_post_type\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slides\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ireland1024-4859.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ireland1024-4846.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ireland1024-4813.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ireland1024-4782.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ireland1024-4765.jpg);\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s hard to believe, but there are abundant palm trees here, lining the beautiful croquet course, overlooking the bay.\u00a0 Wooden benches overlook the rocky beach and make for a great place to watch the sun set in the evening.\u00a0 Campground personnel couldn\u2019t be friendlier, and I highly recommend this location.<\/p>\n<p>In the morning, despite the fog taking some time to lift, I was off to Valencia Island via the Renard Point ferry.\u00a0 You can avoid the ferry, but it will add another 90 minutes driving time to get to Valencia.\u00a0 Turns out that Valencia has an interesting 5,000 year history, being popular in the past with pirates and smugglers.\u00a0 It\u2019s also rumored that John Paul Jones used to like to dock here.<\/p>\n<div class=\"et_pb_slider et_pb_slider_fullwidth_off et_pb_gallery_post_type\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slides\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ireland1024-4891.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ireland1024-4894.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ireland1024-4920.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ireland1024-4922.jpg);\"><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_slide\" style=\"background: url(https:\/\/dougbardwell.com\/db\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ireland1024-4879.jpg);\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>When you complete your five minute ferry ride, you\u2019ll be in downtown Knights Town, site of the world\u2019s first successful transatlantic telegraph cable back in 1858.\u00a0 This charming town has a wealth of historic and charming structures.\u00a0 Take one of the many tiny roads around the island to explore sites like the lighthouse and the Tetrapod Trackway (prehistoric footprints from 385 million year ago.)<\/p>\n<p>Back on the mainland, continue following the Wild Atlantic Way signage, which will keep you off the busy busways and you\u2019ll come first to the Kerry Cliffs and then to the beautiful Skellig Ring Road at Cloghanecanuig with its great ocean views.
