During these COVID-19 days, people are spending more and more time online. That goes for your children as well. Unfortunately, that means more opportunities for them to discover unwanted materials online.

With the rapid adoption of Zoom conferencing, you’ve undoubtedly heard of cases where people randomly try Zoom conference ID numbers hoping to get into an unsuspecting conversation.  Once inside, they look for opportunities to converse with unsupervised children.

Without realizing it, children can be talked into unbelievable things that would make you cringe.  But there’s a firm (Thorn) fighting this type behavior, and actually working with law enforcement to bring the perps to justice.

They’ve recently completed a blog post that should be valuable to anyone with young ones at home that use the Internet.

Thorn article about protecting kids during the COVID-19 pandemic.

While they delve deeper into each of these subjects, here are just a few of their suggestions:

  • Ask your kids to teach you about their favorite apps
  • Participate in online trends with your kids
  • Talk to your kids about sharing content
  • Know the words “sextortion” and “grooming”
  • Become your kids safety net
  • Make sure classroom video meetings (and peer video chats) are secure

It’s certainly worth the few minutes it’ll take to read, so I encourage you to do so or to forward it to someone with children.  These times call for new techniques in parenting.  Good luck.
