The U.S. Catholic Sisters Against Human Trafficking have a great monthly calendar with numerous dates of significance to those working to end racism and trafficking.  So, in addition to this being Black History Month, I wanted to share some other dates you might want to observe.

Friday, February 11  –  Safer Internet Day

Unfortunately with the increase of smartphones and inexpensive computers and tablets, kids have more opportunities to be online than ever before – often without any parental supervision.  Take time now to set limits, install protective software and educate yourselves.

Saturday, February 12 – International Day against the Use of Child Soldiers

Rebel gangs are known for promising young, often hungry, school children a better life and a way to earn lots of money if they will leave school and join their army.  Many do – only to find out rebel gang life is anything but easy or fun. Only with help from organizations like World Vision, do many of these children get an alternate path out.

Monday, February 14 – Valentine’s Day

Giving chocolates this Valentine’s Day?  Make sure you aren’t contributing to human trafficked labor, especially child labor, picking cocoa for unscrupulous suppliers.  Look for Equal Exchange or Fair Trade symbols on the chocolate or cocoa you buy.

Sunday, February 20 – World Day of Social Justice

Just look around and you’ll see signs of social injustice – it’s rampant and it’s everywhere.  Unfortunately, our nation is not the shiny beacon of social justice that it should be.

From intolerance of foreigners to degradation of those who don’t worship like others, to politicians who watch out for themselves instead of their constituents; everywhere you look, examples abound.  Make a resolution to stand up for the world’s most vulnerable, and be a voice of reason in your neighborhood, church, workplace, or organization. Maybe, pick one of these for more ideas.
