FBI still failing to properly handle child sex abuse cases, watchdog says <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The big picture:\u00a0<\/strong>Authorities stated in the\u00a0report<\/a>\u00a0that “significant issues with the FBI’s response to serious allegations involving suspected child abuse” remain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The FBI struggled to meet expectations in a number of areas, including mandatory reporting to other agencies, lack of investigation, victim services and the sharing of tips between FBI field offices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of an audit of the FBI’s handling of such cases, the DOJ’s Office of the Inspector General (OIG) reviewed a sample of 327 incidents and flagged 42 cases from the past three years that required “immediate attention” from the FBI.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

In a review brought on by the FBI\u2019s failures to promptly investigate Nassar, the inspector general found serious problems persist that run the risk of child sexual abuse allegations falling through the cracks as overworked agents juggle dozens of cases at a time. In one case, a victim was abused for 15 months after the FBI first received a tip about a registered sex offender, the report said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis report makes clear that the FBI is simply not doing its job when it comes to protecting our children from the monsters among us who stalk them,\u201d said John Manly, a lawyer who represents victims of Nassar. \u201cDespite years of promises and numerous congressional hearings it\u2019s now clear that the Larry Nassar scandal could happen again today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
