Africa Kamutengo – recycle art

Africa Kamutengo has been creating art from recycled items since 2003.  As he looked around his home town, he saw loads of litter and began wondering what could done to put it to a better use.

He started with bottle caps, decorating them and recycling them into earrings. Refrigerator magnets, necklaces, and bracelets came next.  Now, bottle caps are the inspiration for an entire line of toys, boxes, purses and other interesting items.  Kamutengo also does portraits, picture frames and song writing.

Africa believes in giving back to his community and  trains youth at the Mabyuku Art Center, helping them begin a similar career, working with their hands and learning a productive craft.  Africa was assisted at the Sanganai Travel Trade Fair by Mike Biswasi, son of the Director of the Art Center – R.E. Bisiwasi.
